Getting Started
How do I add a bill?
Tap the + button at the top of the Dashboard. Enter the bill’s name, amount and due date. You can also choose a category, how often it repeats, and a reminder. Tap the checkmark to save.
You can also add bills from Menu (☰) → Manage Bills: tap +.
What can I save with each bill?
Besides the name, amount and due date, each bill can have:
- A category, such as Housing or Utilities
- How often it repeats, and an optional end date
- A reminder
- The payee, the payment website, and notes
If you’ve already paid it, turn on Mark Paid before saving.
What do the buttons at the top of each screen do?
They’re symbols:
- An X closes the screen, or cancels your changes
- A checkmark saves your changes, or finishes
- A pencil lets you edit
On the Dashboard, the calendar button returns to today, + adds a bill, and Menu (☰) opens Settings, Categories, Manage Bills, Notifications and About.
Do I need an account?
No. There’s nothing to sign up for and no sign-in. Your bills are stored on your device. With Premium, iCloud Sync uses the iCloud account you’re already signed in to.
Does Onyx work on iPad and iPhone Duo?
Yes. Onyx works on iPhone, including iPhone Duo, and on iPad. With Premium, iCloud Sync keeps your bills the same on all of them.
On iPhone Duo’s outer display, and when it’s open and turned on its side, the buttons are along the side of the screen instead of the top.
The Dashboard
What does the Dashboard show?
A calendar with each bill’s due date marked. Below the calendar, choose what to see:
- Day: bills due on the day you tapped
- Unpaid: this month’s bills you haven’t paid yet
- Paid: this month’s bills you’ve already paid
Use the arrows beside the month name to move between months, and tap the calendar button at the top to jump back to today.
Why does the calendar show only one week?
Where there isn’t room for the whole month and your bills, such as on a smaller iPhone or with iPhone turned on its side, the calendar shows the week of the day you selected. The arrows then move one week at a time.
To see the whole month, tap the month’s name or swipe down on the calendar. Tap the name again, or swipe up, to go back to one week.
Why are the calendar and my bills side by side?
On a wide screen, such as iPad in landscape or iPhone Duo open and turned on its side, the calendar is on the left and your bills are on the right, with the search field under them.
Under the calendar is a summary of the month: the total and number of Unpaid bills, the total and number of Paid bills, and how many are Overdue.
What does “Overdue” mean?
A bill is overdue when its due date has passed and it hasn’t been paid or skipped.
How do I find a bill?
Type in the Search Bill Names field at the bottom of the Dashboard. Results are grouped by the month each bill is due.
To go back to the calendar, clear the field or tap the calendar button.
How do I see everything about a bill?
Tap the bill to open Bill Details. It shows whether the bill is paid, the series’ details, and its history: Past for what you’ve paid or skipped, and Upcoming for what’s due next. Tap View Full History for every payment.
Paying and Skipping Bills
How do I mark a bill as paid?
Tap the round button on the left of the bill’s row. This records a payment for the amount due, dated today. If you tapped it by mistake, tap Undo in the bar that appears.
What if I paid a different amount, or paid on a different day?
Touch and hold the bill’s row and choose Mark Paid…, or tap the bill and tap Mark Paid in Bill Details. Enter the amount you actually paid and the day you paid it. This doesn’t change the bill’s usual amount for future bills.
How do I fix a payment I already recorded?
Open the bill’s Bill Details and tap the payment under Past (or in View Full History). Tap the pencil to correct the amount or date. Only that payment changes.
How do I undo a payment?
Touch and hold the paid bill and choose Mark as Unpaid. For an older payment, open it from Bill Details and tap Mark as Unpaid.
What does Skip do?
Skip is for a time when a bill doesn’t apply, such as a paused subscription. A skipped bill isn’t counted as unpaid or overdue. To skip, touch and hold the bill and choose Skip. To reverse it, choose Unskip.
Repeating Bills
How do repeating bills work?
When you add a bill, set Repeats to Weekly, Every 2 Weeks, Monthly, Every 3 Months, Every 6 Months or Yearly. Upcoming bills then appear on the calendar on their due dates automatically.
Why can’t I pay a future bill in the series yet?
Future bills in a series are shown as Scheduled. You can pay or skip a scheduled bill once the one before it is paid or skipped.
How do I change a repeating bill?
Tap the bill and tap the pencil (or touch and hold it and choose Edit Series). Your changes apply to the current bill and every later unpaid one. Bills you’ve already paid or skipped keep their amounts, dates and payments; a new name or category is shown on them too, so the history reads the same.
How do I stop a bill from repeating after a certain date?
In Edit Series, turn on Ends and choose the end date. After its last due date, the bill moves to Archived on its own. If bills are already scheduled after the new end date, Onyx asks before deleting them.
Reminders
How do I get a reminder before a bill is due?
When you add or edit a bill, choose Remind Me: on the due date, or 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 or 14 days before.
How do I change what time reminders arrive?
Open Menu (☰) → Notifications and set Reminder Time. The same screen shows how many reminders are coming up.
I’m not getting reminders. What should I check?
- Open Menu (☰) → Notifications. If it says notifications are off, tap Open Settings and allow notifications for Onyx.
- Make sure the bill has a reminder set under Remind Me.
- Check that Focus or Do Not Disturb isn’t silencing notifications.
- Paid and skipped bills don’t send reminders.
Categories
How do I create or change categories?
Open Menu (☰) → Categories. Tap + to make a new one with a name and an icon. Tap a category to rename it or change its icon.
How do I delete a category?
In Categories, swipe left on the category and tap Delete, or open it and tap Delete Category.
Managing, Archiving and Deleting Bills
Where can I see all my bills?
Open Menu (☰) → Manage Bills. It lists each bill once, even if it repeats, split into Active and Archived, along with when each bill is next due and when it was last paid. Tap a bill to open its Bill Details.
What’s the difference between archiving and deleting?
Archive retires a bill you’re finished with. Its future bills are removed, but its payment history is kept. This is a Premium feature.
Delete removes the bill and every bill in its series, including ones already paid. Deleting can’t be undone.
To do either, swipe left on the bill in Manage Bills, or use Archive Series or Delete Series at the bottom of Edit Series.
Can I bring back an archived bill?
Yes. In Manage Bills, swipe left on the archived bill and tap Restore. A bill that ended on its own end date comes back when you move that date later in Edit Series.
Settings
How do I change the currency?
Open Menu (☰) → Settings → Currency. Amounts are shown in the currency you choose. Your region’s currency is used by default.
Can the calendar start on Monday?
Yes. Open Menu (☰) → Settings and change First Day of the Week.
Free Version and Premium
What’s included for free?
Everything except the Premium features: the Dashboard, adding and editing bills, marking paid, skipping, deleting, categories, reminders, search, settings and the Home Screen widgets, for up to five active bill series.
How are bill series counted toward the free limit?
A repeating bill counts once, however many times it repeats. Only active bills count. To make room for a new bill, delete one you no longer need.
What does Premium include?
Premium is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. It includes:
- Unlimited bills
- Archiving bills you’re finished with, keeping their payment history
- iCloud Sync, to keep your bills the same on your iPhone and iPad
- Export of your bills and payment history to a spreadsheet file
- Auto-Pay, which tracks bills that you’ve set up for automatic payment
To buy it, open Menu (☰) → Settings → Premium.
I bought Premium, but the app doesn’t show it. What should I do?
Open Menu (☰) → Settings → Premium and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you’re signed in to the App Store with the same Apple Account you used to buy it. This is also how you turn on Premium on another device.
The Premium screen says that in-app purchases aren’t allowed.
Purchases are restricted on the device. To allow them, open the Settings app and go to Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → iTunes & App Store Purchases. If a parent, a school or an employer manages the device, ask them to allow in-app purchases.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases are handled by Apple. Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
iCloud Sync (Premium)
How do I keep my bills the same on all my devices?
Buy or restore Premium on each device, and sign in to iCloud with the same Apple Account on each. iCloud Sync is on by default; you can check it in Menu (☰) → Settings → iCloud Sync. Your currency, first day of the week and reminder time sync too.
How do I stop syncing on one device?
Open Menu (☰) → Settings and turn off iCloud Sync. Your bills stay on that device and in iCloud, and changes you make stop syncing until you turn it back on.
Use Onyx’s own switch, not the Settings app. Turning off iCloud for Onyx in your device’s Settings app removes your synced bills from that device (they stay in iCloud and come back if you turn it on again), and changes that haven’t synced yet can be lost.
Settings says “Not Signed In” or “Unavailable.” What should I check?
Open the Settings app and make sure you’re signed in to iCloud, and that iCloud is turned on for Onyx. Until then, your bills are kept on the device.
A change I made isn’t showing on my other device.
- Check that both devices show iCloud Sync as On in Onyx’s Settings, and use the same Apple Account.
- Make sure both devices are online. Syncing can take a few minutes.
- Open Onyx on the other device; it picks up changes when it opens.
Home Screen Widgets
How do I add a widget?
Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen, tap Edit → Add Widget, and search for Onyx. There are two:
- Next Bill (small): the next bill due
- Upcoming Bills (medium and large): overdue bills and everything due in the next 30 days, with how many bills and their total
Tap a bill in a widget to open it in Onyx.
My widget says “Open Onyx to see upcoming bills.”
Open Onyx once. The widget fills in after Onyx has run on the device, such as after you install it or restore the device from a backup.
My widget isn’t up to date.
Opening Onyx updates the widgets right away. Otherwise they refresh on their own about once an hour.
Can I mark a bill paid from a widget?
No. Widgets show upcoming bills; tap a bill to open it in Onyx and pay it there.
Exporting Your Bills (Premium)
How do I export my bills?
Open Menu (☰) → Settings → Export Bills. Onyx makes a CSV file you can open in Numbers, Excel or Google Sheets, and lets you save it to Files or send it with AirDrop, Mail or Messages.
What’s in the file?
Every bill you’ve saved, one row each: paid, unpaid, skipped and archived, from every year, with its category, due date, amount, status, payment date and amount paid, how it repeats, payee, payment website and notes, and whether it’s paid by Auto-Pay and with which payment method. Future bills in a series that are still Scheduled aren’t included.
Can I import a file back into Onyx?
No. To keep a copy of your bills that you can bring back, use iCloud Sync.
Auto-Pay (Premium)
Does Onyx pay my bills?
No. Onyx doesn’t make payments. Use Auto-Pay to track bills that you’ve set up for automatic payment with your bank or payee. Onyx records each one as paid the day after it’s due.
How do I set up Auto-Pay?
When you add a bill, or in Edit Series, turn on Auto-Pay. You can also enter a Payment Method, such as “Joint Checking,” or pick one you’ve used before from the menu beside it. The payment method is optional. Use a name you’ll recognize, never a card number: it appears in notifications, including on the Lock Screen.
What happens when an Auto-Pay bill is due?
Onyx can’t see your bank, so it follows the bill’s schedule. Until the due date, the bill shows Auto-Pay instead of its usual due line, and it never shows as overdue. The day after the due date, Onyx records it as paid for its usual amount, as Paid by Auto-Pay, and a notification confirms it that morning at your reminder time (Menu (☰) → Notifications).
What if the payment didn’t go through?
Tap the bill, or the payment under Past in Bill Details, and tap Mark as Unpaid. It takes one tap. The bill then shows Automatic payment failed and is overdue, so you can pay it yourself. Auto-Pay won’t record it again, and it continues to record later bills in the series.
Can I change what an automatic payment recorded?
Yes. Open the payment under Past in Bill Details and tap the pencil to change the amount, the date or the payment method. Only that payment changes; the bill’s usual amount and payment method stay the same.
I turned on Auto-Pay, but an overdue bill wasn’t marked paid.
Auto-Pay records bills due from the day you turn it on. A bill that was already overdue isn’t recorded: mark it paid yourself, and the ones after it are recorded automatically.
Privacy and Your Data
Where are my bills stored?
On your device. If you use iCloud Sync, they’re also kept in your own private iCloud account. There’s no Onyx account or server, and we can’t see your bills.
What happens if I delete the app?
The bills on that device are deleted along with it. If you use iCloud Sync, they stay in your iCloud account: reinstall Onyx, tap Restore Purchases, and they sync back. Premium itself can always be restored with Restore Purchases.
How do I delete my bills from iCloud?
In the Settings app, go to [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Onyx.
Where is the privacy policy?
Read our Privacy Policy.
